Despite a recent report by Yahoo! Sports' Dan Wetzel it would appear that Anderson Silva will not relinquish his MMA title after all. Wetzel reported this weekend that Silva's manager Ed Soares told UFC President Dana White that Silva wished to remain at light heavyweight permanently. The report went on to say that White was agreeable to a permanent move up to the weight and that they could put the middleweight title up for grabs. Not so says Soares.
"It's not true. I never said that to Dana," Soares told MMAWeekly. "I never said he would move up and relinquish the title. I have said to Dana that he'd like to fight again at 205 (but not permanently)."
Soares client Anderson Silva made quick work of former UFC lightweight champion Forrest Griffin this weekend at UFC 101 in Philadelphia in a fight at 205 pounds. His performance was so dominant that it left many to wonder who at the middleweight or light heavyweight division could compete with the heavy handed Brazilian.
After the fight White stated that middleweight Dan Henderson, who Silva has already beaten, would be given shot at the middleweight champion. Silva and Soares are both lukewarm about the prospects of facing Hendo for the second time.
"I feel a true number one opponent (at 185) would be if Henderson fought the winner of Nate Marquardt and Damian Maia," Soares said. "That would produce a true number one contender... we could take another fight at 205 or a catchweight fight (in the meantime). I've always said the same thing, he wants the biggest fights possible, whether it's at 205 or 185."
